Welcome

Icelandic

I bought this fiber from Frelsi Farm at the 2018 NY Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY. I bought 8 ounces but only spun 1 last night to start my fiber fun.

This picture is pretty bad, I took it on the first flat surface that I had which was the back of a poster. I’ll take another later and fix it.

White Icelandic fiber on a white background

I weighed out an ounce and started spinning it up. This was actual roving, not combed or carded, just gathered into general lengths with most of the fibers lengthwise. I ended up with lots of slubs and inconsistent width in spinning.

The fiber was shiny before and after spinning, not quite soft but not scratchy either. The staple length was 4-5 inches long, so I had to adjust my fiber supply hand further from the drafting point than I’ve been used to with other things I’ve been spinning. It requires less twist and needed faster takeup in order to not twist up badly. It was also naturally thicker, probably around a sport weight single. It was very poofy feeling on the storage bobbin. It also shed a lot of tiny bits of fiber all over me during spinning.

A fuzzy white yarn on a bobbin

As you can see, it’s very fuzzy and this would probably be a good outerwear yarn. I’m going to ply it and finish it in the next few days and see how that turns out.

Plying turned out very nicely. It didn’t poof a lot, but that’s okay because it got softer! The plys are softer than the single, which I wasn’t really expecting and it’s quite lovely. Still not next to skin soft but nice all the same.
